Who gets to accompany you to a medical appointment

Hi all,

I saw this on the Canadian Patient Safety Institute and wondered what everyone's experience has been. I was accompanying my infant son, so there was no question I was there to advocate on his behalf.

This woman was at her father's bedside for 40 days, and was given the third degree. How could this happen?
