Today at 1:30 there is a twitter chat hosted by Health Quality Ontario at #HQOchat. Wish I had posted this sooner so those who have not already seen it on Twitter would know about it but thought I would open the discussion here and will follow up by posting some of the chat insights here later. HQO's Question 1, kicking off the discussion is "Are we measuring too much or too little in the Ontario healthcare system?"

I realize that data is important to inform quality improvement but how do we measure the things that matter to patients? How do we measure patient engagement in a collaborative, co-design approach to healthcare? Is it important to measure? Are we measuring the right things? Are we measuring enough?

Love to hear your thoughts! Cheers, Angela

Angela, I have been involved with HQO on their patient experience measurement committee and on other efforts to measure what is important to patients. The best I have found is the AFHTO (Association of Family Health Teams of Ontario) patient experience survey which is complex as it measures what is important to patients and how the measure contributes to the trust the patient has with their provider.

Most measurement seems to be focused on process and procedures like did the patient receive x or y test. The AFHTO one focuses more on relationship measures like did the receptionist treat you with respect.

Interested to understand what others think are important to measure. Cheers! Alies
