All, this is a shameless promotion since my daughter-in-law, Tara Woodbury is the producer and major incubator of this indigenous film, Night Raiders, supporting her friend and colleague, Danis, the writer/director from the inception of the idea. It was the Friday night gala film at TIFF this year. It opened in theatres Oct 8 so is now available to be seen. We went as a family to see the gala and were captivated by the film and so very proud of Tara and the team’s accomplishment. I had a chance to visit on set in Hamilton one day and it was a kick to see that scene in the film.

Night Raiders is a Canadian-New Zealand science fiction apocalyptic film written and directed by Danis Goulet. The film stars Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Brooklyn Letexier-Hart (the young girl in the film who is amazing), Alex Tarrant, Amanda Plummer and Violet Nelson and executive produced by Taika Waititi (directed JoJo Rabbit and Thor: Love and Thunder). Set in a dystopian version of North America in the year 2044, the film centres on Niska a Cree woman who joins a resistance movement to the military government in order to save her daughter.

If you get the chance, go and see the film. Almost all the actors are indigenous as well as the crew. All the editing and special effects were done in New Zealand by the Maori crew. While it is set in the future it has echoes of the past, in particular residential schools and there is some Cree spoken during the film, I believe for the first time in a major film.

As a proud, mama-in-law, I just couldn’t help sharing this with you. Alies

Kudos to your daughter in law. I look forward to seeing Night Raiders when my grandchildren from the Twin Cities, MN finally come north for a visit next week.
