How did COVID-19 impact patients’ hospital care experience?

WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) is looking to speak to patients who were hospitalized during COVID-19 or their family members. We invite you or your family member to share your care experience for inclusion in a public report scheduled for early 2022. Selected patients will be invited to share their experience through a one-hour phone interview in November 2021.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THIS WORK?

In collaboration with health system stakeholders and patients, CIHI developed the Canadian Patient Experiences Survey – Inpatient Care (CPES-IC), a standard survey that patients fill out to provide feedback about the quality of care they received during their most recent hospital stay. Patient stories, in combination with CPES-IC data, will be used in this report to help inform how COVID-19 has impacted a patient’s hospital care experience and Canada’s health system during the pandemic.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

You can participate in this interview if:

During the pandemic (April 2020 – March 2021), you were admitted to a hospital bed or are the admitted patient’s family member or caregiver (an unpaid individual who attends to the needs of the admitted patient).

You were 18 years or older when admitted to the hospital.

You have access to the internet or a telephone to complete a one-hour interview in -November 2021.

You are comfortable with your story being publicly shared. Please note that your real name or photograph does not need to be shared.

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?

If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Tracy Fernandez at prems@cihi.ca by October 29, 2021. You will be asked to fill out a short questionnaire to help us in the selection process. Participation is voluntary.

SUPPORTS AND COMPENSATION

CIHI will contact selected participants before the interview to answer questions and schedule an interview at a time of your convenience.

To thank selected participants for their time, a small token of thanks in the amount of $50 will be offered. Further details will be shared prior to the interview.
