We are planning two CIHR research funding applications; one will explore patient engagement in hospital service planning and improvement and the other will explore patient engagement in the development of clinical practice guidelines so that they better reflect patient preferences. We submitted versions of both last year and were unsuccessful. Funding is more likely if various types of organizations that represent patients and health care professionals take part in informing the research questions and/or rationale, and take part in its conduct as part of the research team. We currently have one patient on the research team, and are gathering input from patients at my hospital and through Cancer Care Ontario, and SPOR Ontario has committed to linking us with patients if we are funded, but are seeking broader input that will help us strengthen our applications and to establish relationships with groups who also have an interest in patient engagement.

I am attaching draft summaries of both proposals and wonder if you or others in your group would be interested in providing input or speaking further about these ideas and somehow contributing to the underlying rationale and research questions, and somehow being involved in the research if we are funded. The full application is due by Sept 15 and results will be announced by Jan 23, 2017. I am currently collecting input from others and hope to finalize the application by Sept 11.
