Choosing Wisely Canada is recruiting a patient and public representative to join the central team. We hope that this will ensure that we can continue to advance our efforts to engage Canadian clinicians and patients in conversations about unnecessary care.

Please see the Terms of Reference below for more information, and details on how to apply. Please do feel free to share this with individuals in your networks who you feel would be interested in such a role.

Public Member Recruitment to Choosing Wisely Canada Central Team: Terms of Reference

      Background

Choosing Wisely Canada is a national campaign to help clinicians and patients engage in conversations about unnecessary tests and treatments, and make smart and effective care choices. Launched in 2014, Choosing Wisely Canada has worked with national medical professional societies and patient organizations to release recommendations and materials related to the campaign. Choosing Wisely Canada is organized by a small team from the University of Toronto, Canadian Medical Association and St. Michael's Hospital. To date, this team has consisted of clinicians, researchers, managers who administrators who determine strategic priorities and oversee the daily aspects of the campaign. The governance of Choosing Wisely Canada is to respective funders but it is an autonomous entity, and is under the leadership of Dr. Wendy Levinson.

As the campaign has matured, there is a growing recognition of the need for further patient and public involvement. Currently, the campaign staffing does not include a public representative to provide strategic input and advice related to campaign efforts. Given the centrality of patients and the public to the campaign, Choosing Wisely Canada is committed to recruiting a public representative to join the central team to address this gap. It is anticipated that the addition of a public representative will serve to improve campaign capabilities related to patient and public engagement.

When working with partners and staff, Choosing Wisely Canada is committed to the principles of: grassroots, evidence-based, focused on improving quality of care for patients and the public and avoiding harm, transparency and professionalism. Further, it is incumbent on each member of the central team to adhere to these principles and ensure that their work is aligned.

Choosing Wisely Canada staff hold contracts with the University of Toronto and St. Michael's Hospital. This person would begin as part of a one year term, with opportunities for feedback at 3, 6, and 9 months.

The public representative would report directly to the Chair of Choosing Wisely Canada, Dr. Wendy Levinson.

The public representative would provide strategic advice and serve as an early sounding board for Choosing Wisely Canada's patient and public engagement efforts. This role entails participating in weekly team meetings, quarterly strategic meetings as well as regular communications by email and telephone.

Responsibilities would focused on determining and driving strategy associated with Choosing Wisely Canada's patient and public engagement. Further, they would be a resource as an ‘early sounding board' for aspects of the campaign related to patients and the public. All of the work of the public representative would be done in collaboration with other members of the Choosing Wisely Canada staff.

The public representative would be remunerated for their time and engagement with Choosing Wisely Canada at a rate to be discussed. The expectation would be that this individual participate in meetings either remotely or in person, and be accessible by telephone or email with a reasonable response time.

TO APPLY: Please email Karen Born (karen.born@utoronto.ca) with a brief paragraph (under 250 words) explaining why you would like to be the public representative for Choosing Wisely Canada. Deadline for applications is Friday, November 3, 2017. All applicants will be notified by December 22, 2017 of the status of their application.
