      Hello PaCERs,

We are excited to announce the PaCER Mentor Training Workshop Series launching this fall -- the first Workshop will be held on September 19th, 5:30-7:00pm at the TRW Building, 3280 Hospital Drive NW. Please see the attached poster outlining all of the details.

The Workshops have been developed as a training program and pre-requisite for anyone considering PaCER Mentoring opportunities.

The Series will be offered on a regular yearly basis and all costs to attend are covered by PaCER. Attendance can be in-person or online through AnyMeeting (www.anymeeting.com) with meeting links provided to all attendees prior to the start of each Workshop.

To RSVP please send an email, on or before September 12th, to: pacergroup@ucalgary.ca

I have a poster with the dates of the 7 workshops. If anyone is interested I can send it to them by email

        Hi Annette!

Please send me a poster. I'm interested in learning more. But first...

I'm confused about the difference between a PaCER patient-researcher and a PaCER mentor, the focus of these training workshops.

Could you explain the difference? How does a "mentor" fit into the PaCER scheme. This "What We Do" part of the PaCER webpage doesn't help.

        Thanks, Carolyn

          Hi Carolyn

I sent them an email to ask them the same thing. I can send you the poster by email but wasn't able to attach it on groupsite. It does not give more details about the role but the workshops sound very useful.

I think a PaCER mentor may fill a different role than a grad. Alies and I both went through the program and we are now qualified to be "research interns" but I think that role applies mainly to Albertan grads some of whom have been hired by the SCNs (strategic clinical networks) as employees, or a least paid partners.

          Annette

            Hi Annette and Carolyn,

I'm doing the PaCER internship program this year. It's been great and a lot of work 🙂 My PaCER mentor sent us an email to suss out our interest in beginning the training process to become a PaCER mentor. From how that was described and how this is worded, I am assuming they are the same program.

The way it was described to me by my mentor was as heavy on the skills of working with groups. Keep in mind that's one person's perspective. In conversations with Nancy Marlett, she has indicated that she is very interested in building this program outside Alberta. They have added the ability to do distance learning this last cohort - with most of the material on video.

I don't know if they are training mentors who have not been interns first.

            Deirdre

We (current PaCER interns) received the poster and email this morning, so I asked if the trainings were independent of each - meaning "could someone train as a PaCER mentor without going through the intern program?". This is what they responded:

It will be difficult to really comprehend the content and methodology. So a no unless they have taken the program at some time or are currently enrolled in Course 3.

                Deirdre

Thanks, Deidre. This clarifies the program offering to my (non-PaCER) mind.

I can't manage to fit the basic PaCER training into my busy schedule, but really believe in the methodology and love the reports and outcomes articles that I've read.

If you or Nancy Marlett learn of any possibility to offer the course in BC, I'm sure there would be a class-worth of people who'd step forward to learn. Then, creating a BC "campus" for PaCER research could become a reality. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

Or perhaps Nancy and friends have another model for "spread"?

                  Best regards, Carolyn

Hi all, I'm late to the convo. I'm not sure if any poster has been submitted to GroupSite or not.

My understanding/experience when I was involved in the distance learning PaCER program was that mentors were people that had done the training (interns, such as Alies, Annette, Sandra Z. etc., or academics/researchers/HC prof., who may or may not have done the PaCER training).

The group that I was involved in through the IMAGINE Network was assigned a mentor by the PaCER Group (Nancy M., et al) to answer our questions, have informal/formal meetings during the training, clarify assignments, among other things.

To my understanding, when I was enrolled in the course, there were no mentors at that time that were 'patient' interns & there were some challenges.

I believe one of the reasons they want to train more mentors is because Nancy wants to expand the training outside of Alberta.

                    Be well,

                    Gail
